Although the head and neck may not seem like areas with a lot of muscle mass, muscles are present, and therefore muscle blocks can form. These blocks not only cause physical discomfort but also affect psychological well-being.
Here are 4 types of muscle tensions in the head and neck to pay attention to in order to harmonize the body and mind:
Neurasthenic Helmet Involves the scalp, forehead, and occiput (back of the head). Symptoms: A feeling of tightness in the head, as if wearing a "rubber swim cap"; tension headaches around the head; impaired blood circulation in the soft tissues of the head. Causes: The neurasthenic helmet is typical of modern people living in large cities. It is caused by overthinking, excessive intellectualization — "living in the head." Constant mental focus, a sedentary lifestyle, and a disconnect from bodily sensations lead to scalp muscles becoming increasingly tense. Psychological Effects: Rigid thinking patterns, a loss of ability to absorb new information, along with chronic fatigue and irritability. Exercises: Palpation and self-massage with skin shifts can help diagnose and address the neurasthenic helmet. The goal is to find areas of tightness, immovable skin, bumps, indentations, and painful spots, indicating the presence of the helmet.
Eye Block Involves the eye movement muscles, scalp, and neck muscles. Symptoms: Darting or fixed gaze; constant frowning of the forehead and between the brows; pain, heaviness, and pressure in the eyes due to compressed blood vessels; vision deterioration. Causes: The eye block forms out of fear of the world, especially social situations. It often develops in childhood when, due to psychological dynamics with parents, the child is constantly on edge, afraid of making mistakes and disappointing them. This leads to a habit of controlling the outside world through constant eye observation. Psychological Effects: Chronic anxiety. Exercises: Any gentle eye exercises can help release the eye block, with a focus on sensations in the eyes and eye muscles.
Temporomandibular Tension (Jaw Block) Symptoms: Often goes unnoticed, but can be identified by two indirect signs: it often coincides with tension in the hands (wrists, forearms, shoulders) and manifests as tight, "through the teeth" speech. Causes: This block is the result of social adaptation, particularly the suppression of anger. When someone is angry but doesn't express it, they reflexively clench their jaw. Psychological Effects: Suppressed anger builds emotional tension, leading to passive-aggressive behavior such as chronic lateness, sarcasm, or taking on a victim role in crisis situations, shifting responsibility to others. Exercises: Self-massage is effective: press your fingers firmly on both sides of the jaw joints and very slowly open your mouth, while resisting with your fingers. Open your mouth to the maximum, then slowly close it, moving the muscles downward with your fingers. Repeat 5-6 times with closed eyes, focusing on the jaw joints. Additionally, gently stretch the jaw muscles by inserting a suitable object (like a clenched fist) between the teeth and holding the position for 2-3 minutes to relax the muscles.
Throat Tension Involves the throat, tongue, deep neck, and occiput muscles. Symptoms: A lump in the throat, mild choking sensations, constant urge to swallow, soft or quiet speech. Causes: Throat tension is the result of suppressing crying, shouting, and other emotions. It can form in childhood or adulthood. Psychological Effects: Over time, the ability to cry, express feelings, or verbalize thoughts fades, leading to an appearance of emotional restraint and stoicism, which is often a mask for psychological trauma and muscle tension. Exercises: Speech and articulation techniques, such as loudly pronouncing sounds like A–O–U–I–E, can help. The "Lion Pose" (Simhasana) is also effective in releasing throat tension. 💆♀️ At Natural Rejuvenation YEG, we specialize in releasing these tensions with our exclusive techniques.
